Become a Volunteer & Make a Difference

Every day, volunteers help us care for animals, keep our shelter running, and build a stronger community for pets and people. Whether you have just a few hours a month or time every week, we have a role that fits your schedule and interests. No prior experience is needed—just a kind heart and a willingness to help.

Why Volunteer With Us?

Volunteering at our shelter is more than just a task—it’s a way to create real change in the lives of animals in Cape Girardeau and beyond. You’ll meet like-minded people, learn new skills, and experience the joy of making a difference—one pet at a time.

Ways to Get Involved

Volunteers help with a wide variety of tasks, including:

  • Dog walking and cat socialization
  • Cleaning kennels and laundry
  • Greeting visitors and assisting at events
  • Fundraising and community outreach
  • Office and admin support

We also welcome group volunteers from schools, clubs, and local businesses.

  • How old do I have to be to volunteer?

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to work independently. If you're under 16, you can still volunteer with a parent or guardian. We occasionally offer group activities for younger students through schools or clubs.

  • Do I need experience with animals?

No experience is required. We provide training and guidance for all new volunteers. Whether you’re walking dogs, folding laundry, or helping at events, we’ll make sure you feel comfortable and supported.

  • What is the time commitment?

You can volunteer as often as your schedule allows. Some people help out weekly, while others join us for events or seasonal needs. We appreciate every hour, no matter how small.

  • Can I volunteer with a group?

Yes. We welcome school groups, civic organizations, local businesses, and faith groups. Please contact us in advance so we can plan the right project for your team.

  • Do you offer community service hours?

Yes. We’re happy to sign off on community service for school or court-ordered hours. Just let us know your deadline and requirements when you sign up.

  • What kind of help do you need most?

Right now, we’re especially in need of volunteers for weekday dog walking, weekend event help, and daily laundry and cleaning tasks. But any role you fill makes a difference.
